The magnificent Statton Tobacco-Leaf Bed, featuring hand-finishing, carving and bed bolt construction, reproduces an heirloom which was once owned by a prominent collector and dealer of American antiques in Ridgefield, Connecticut. With its classic elegance and detail, the antique, circa 1790-1800, is a prime example of the American Federal style.
In spite of the original bed's New England association, it is likely that a southern cabinetmaker devised the unusual tobacco leaf motif to symbolically acknowledge the source of a prosperous planter's wealth.
